In a bid to crackdown on Queensland’s youth crime crisis, teenage criminals will be fitted and tracked with ankle bracelets. The move comes after the Youth Justice Minister Leanne Linard revealed that one juvenile offender in Queensland has already been fitted with a GPS ankle monitor.
The use of ankle monitors for juvenile offenders is not a new concept. In fact, social psychologists developed them in the 1960s as a way to offer positive reinforcement to young people who have committed crimes. Electronic tagging systems are typically used to track offenders, sending regular signals to receiver units installed in their homes.
However, some studies have shown that 64% of minors who fail to comply with monitoring conditions actually cut off their ankle bracelets. As such, there are concerns about how effective this type of tracking system can be in curbing youth crime.
The ACT Party has also reiterated its calls for youth offenders to wear ankle bracelets amid the recent spike in retail crime. Meanwhile, a $3.8 million trial of electronic monitoring devices for young people was recently conducted by the Queensland government, but it failed to meet expectations according to youth justice advocates.
It appears that the state government is now looking at newer models of ankle monitors which rely on 4G networks instead of outdated 3G networks currently used by hundreds of parolees, pedophiles and young offenders in Queensland.
Ultimately, it remains unclear whether fitting juvenile criminals with ankle monitors will help reduce youth crime rates in the state or not. However, it is hoped that this measure will provide an additional layer of protection for communities across Queensland and help keep young people out of trouble as Queenslanders call for action on the youth crime crisis.
