Voice referendum legislation passes federal parliament

Australians will take part in a referendum before the end of the year with legislation allowing a vote on the Voice clearing its final hurdle in parliament. There was fierce debate in the senate but the prime minister says the final decision is now over to the people.

The historic Voice referendum legislation has passed the federal parliament, paving the way for a referendum on enshrining an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the Constitution.

Prime Minister Albanese said it was a momentous day for Australia and that the final decision now rests with the people.

“This is about giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a voice in our democracy,” he said. “It’s about recognising their unique culture, history and connection to this land.”

The legislation will allow Australians to vote on whether or not to create an advisory body, known as The Voice, which would advise parliament and government on matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The referendum must now be held between two and six months’ time. Committees of politicians who voted yes and no in the Senate debate will be established to oversee the process.

The government has launched an information program to help inform Australians about the Voice referendum. It encourages everyone to read up on what is being proposed before they cast their vote.

“It’s important that all Australians understand what is being proposed so they can make an informed decision when they go to vote,” Prime Minister Albanese said. The Voice Referendum Information Booklet provides further information on how a referendum works, what changes are being proposed, and why it is important for Australia’s future.
