Holly Knight, the songwriter behind Tina Turner’s hit single ‘The Best’, has expressed her sadness at the death of her close friend.
Knight, who wrote the song with Mike Chapman in 1983, said she was “gutted” by the news of Turner’s passing on May 30th 2023. Speaking to Primary Wave Music, Knight said: “Tina was a great friend and collaborator for many years. I feel so gutted that she’s gone.”
The pair had worked together on several projects since their first collaboration in 1984 on ‘Better Be Good To Me’. In addition to ‘The Best’, they also wrote ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ and ‘The Warrior’.
Knight is an accomplished songwriter, producer and musician who has written hits for some of the biggest artists in music including Aerosmith (“Rag Doll”), Kiss (“Hide Your Heart”) and Bon Jovi (“Livin’ On A Prayer”). She has been a successful hit songwriter for the past three decades.
In a 2016 interview with Songwriters Universe, Knight spoke about how she felt when she heard Turner sing one of her songs: “It’s always exciting when you hear your song being sung by someone else. I remember hearing Tina singing ‘The Best’ for the first time. It was very exciting.”
Turner’s musical The Tina Turner Musical began previews at London’s Aldwych Theatre in April 2018 and features three of Knight’s songs – ‘The Best’, ‘Better Be Good To Me’ and ‘Be Tender With Me Baby’.
Knight said: “Tina was an incredible artist who inspired so many people around the world with her music. I am proud to have been part of her legacy.”
