Researchers hope three-in-one jab will ease ‘vaccine fatigue’

Researchers hope a new three-in-one jab will help ease ‘vaccine fatigue’ and cut down trips to the GP. It’s being trialled in Queensland, targeting COVID, the flu and serious respiratory issues.

The researchers at the University of The Sunshine Coast have recently announced their latest clinical trial for the development of a new 3-in-1 vaccine that would provide immunization against COVID-19, Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in one dosage.

This investigational vaccine has been created with older individuals in mind, as it will enable a more convenient and efficient way to help ward off these three serious respiratory viruses simultaneously. If successful, it could also provide tremendous potential for decreasing the burden of illness experienced by those most vulnerable to severe complications from these viral illnesses. Certainly, increased immunity from a single dose would save a lot of time and aggravation for elderly persons who may be unable to complete multiple appointments when dealing with particular seasonal vaccines each year.

This clinical trial recruited participants aged 50 to 75 years with good general health. Candidates must not have received a COVID-19 vaccine, an influenza vaccine or any other vaccine within the four months, six months and 28 days prior to study vaccination respectively.

They also had to certify that they have not had COVID-19 in the 90 days before joining the trial, nor tested positive for influenza or RSV within 6 months prior to study participation.

Furthermore, it is mandatory for prospective participants to have a BMI between 18.0 and 35.0 kg/m2 inclusive. Those selected are be required to attend up to 7 visits at our South Brisbane clinic and 8 phone calls during a period of up to 13 months as part of this trial.

The trial comprises people who:

  • are aged between 50 and 75 years inclusive
  • are in good general health
  • have NOT received a COVID-19 vaccine in the 4 months prior to study vaccination
  • have NOT received an influenza vaccine in the 6 months prior to study vaccination
  • have NOT received any other vaccines in the 28 days prior to study vaccination
  • have NOT had COVID-19 in the 90 days prior to study vaccination
  • have not tested positive for influenza or RSV within 6 months prior to study vaccination
  • have a Body mass index (BMI) between 18.0 to 35.0 kg/m2, inclusive
  • can attend up to 7 visits at South Brisbane clinic and 8 phone calls for a period of up to 13 months
