Sky News host James Macpherson says Premier “giggles” Miles has vowed to push ahead with a treaty between non-indigenous people and indigenous people.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles will forge ahead to progress state’s landmark Path to Treaty program ahead of this year’s election.
“Here we go dividing up the community again,” Mr Macpherson said.
“His pushing ahead with the treaty despite the fact that 70 per cent of QLD voted no to dividing Australia by race last time October in the referendum.
“And former premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, after the referendum, walked away from the treaty saying unless there’s bipartisan agreement, then it’s not going to work.”
Miles To Push Ahead With Treaty
Queensland Premier Steven Miles is committed to advancing the state’s significant Path to Treaty program prior to this year’s election, regardless of opposition. The treaty aims to establish a formal agreement between indigenous and non-indigenous residents of Queensland.
However, this decision has been met with criticism. Commentator James Macpherson has expressed concern that the treaty would further divide the community. He referred to a previous referendum in which 70% of Queensland voters rejected the notion of racial division in Australia.
Former Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk had previously withdrawn support for the treaty after the referendum, stating that it would only be effective if there was bipartisan agreement. Despite this, Miles has chosen to continue pushing for the treaty.
