Brand new Aussie AI technology is now able to forecast whether a medical patient’s condition is deteriorating and whether or not doctors need to provide intensive care. For more, Today’s medical expert Dr Nick Coatsworth joins the Today Show and explains how this works and how it can save lives.
AI Predicts Intensive Care Needs: An Australian Breakthrough
Australian researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can predict when a patient needs intensive care. The two-stage AI prediction models are able to accurately and precisely determine the optimal timing to wean intubated patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).
The technology is based on a triage system that uses an AI algorithm to assess patient information during emergency medical services (EMS) calls. This helps clinicians to make more informed decisions about critical care for their patients. It can also help with resource allocation in ICUs, recognizing morbidity and mortality risk, and identifying potential complications before they arise.
In addition, the AI system has been used to predict the need for critical care of COVID-19 patients with more than 95% accuracy. Dr Nick Coatsworth, Australia’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, commented on the breakthrough: “This is a great example of how AI technology can be used to improve healthcare outcomes. It has huge potential for helping us better understand and manage complex medical conditions like COVID-19.”
The research team behind this project has also developed machine learning models that use patient data to aid clinical decision-making. These predictive AI models can inform ICU resource allocation, recognize morbidity and mortality risk, and identify potential complications before they occur.
Dr Coatsworth believes this technology could revolutionize healthcare: “AI has the power to transform how we diagnose diseases, treat illnesses, and even prevent them from occurring in the first place. We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what it can do for us – but I’m confident that this new breakthrough will be a game changer for healthcare professionals around the world.”
