Millions of Aussies are at risk of contracting COVID-19 this winter as the fifth wave takes hold. This is according to experts, who warn that the country is facing a “perfect storm” of conditions that could lead to a surge in cases.
The warning comes as Australia’s vaccination program continues to roll out, with more than 10 million doses administered so far. However, experts say that the vaccine rollout alone won’t be enough to protect Australians from the virus this winter.
Dr. David Smith, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Melbourne, says that the combination of colder weather and increased travel during winter holidays could create ideal conditions for a surge in cases. He warns that if people don’t take precautions such as social distancing and wearing masks, there could be a significant increase in infections over the coming months.
“We know from past experience that cold weather can help viruses spread more easily,” Dr Smith said. “And when you combine this with increased travel during holiday periods, it creates a perfect storm for COVID-19.”
He added: “It’s important for everyone to remember that even though we’re in the middle of a vaccine rollout, we still need to take precautions against COVID-19 this winter.”
Australia has seen four waves of COVID-19 since the pandemic began last year, with each wave leading to an increase in cases and hospitalisations. The most recent wave was brought on by an outbreak in Victoria last month, which saw thousands of new cases reported across the state.
While Australia has been largely successful in containing outbreaks so far, experts warn that another wave could cause significant disruption if people don’t take precautions this winter.
