Meteor lights up Far North Queensland’s sky in epic spectacle

Night was briefly turned into day as a meteor hit the atmosphere and burnt up over North Queensland on Saturday night. One community was even shaken by a sonic boom.

Meteor Sighting in Far North Queensland

On Saturday, May 20nd, 2023, a suspected meteor lit up the night sky in Far North Queensland. Mareeba farmer Marcello Avolio was one of many witnesses who saw the spectacular sight and captured it on video.

The meteor was seen from Mackay to Cairns and was described by locals as a “giant fireball” that flew through the sky with a loud boom. It created a light spectacle that stretched over 1500km along the Australian coastline.

Meteors are small pieces of rock or metal that originate from space and enter Earth’s atmosphere. They form when asteroids break apart due to collisions or other forces in space, releasing debris into our atmosphere. As they enter Earth’s atmosphere, they heat up and create a bright streak of light across the night sky – like what was seen in Far North Queensland last weekend.

The sighting has sparked interest among scientists, who are now looking into any potential scientific significance of the event. Plans are being made to study the meteor further and track similar sightings in the future.
