We’ve all noticed how roads have got busier since Covid restrictions have been eased. But spare a thought for Manila, Ranked by one study the worst city for congestion in south-east Asia. Many people there commute for hours each day, putting pressure on the country’s new government to fix the congestion mess.
For residents of Manila, the downside to the easing of Covid restrictions has been a sharp rise in road congestion. Travelling from one side of this huge sprawling city to the other can take up to four hours. It’s little wonder then that it recently topped a study as south-east Asia’s most congested city.
Sadly, these already grave problems are predicted to worsen in the future if left unaddressed, placing increasing pressure on the country’s government to develop strategies for reducing traffic and improving public transport infrastructure. Although no easy fix exists, tackling this issue may be key to giving citizens of Manila respite from their daily commuting woes.
