Fast food by drone – Melbourne’s new flying delivery service

Drones are whizzing through the skies in Melbourne’s east in a Victorian-first service redefining home delivery. Coffee and hot food is being sent by air at high speed, but the operator insists it is safe. Thanks to a partnership between drone delivery service Wing and DoorDash. This innovative service will cater to the city’s eastern suburbs.

The drones, which can travel up to seven kilometers from their home base at Eastland shopping center in Ringwood, are capable of reaching speeds of 110 kilometers per hour while carrying a load of approximately one kilogram. This environmentally friendly service is a first for Melbourne, with the five-kilogram styrofoam drones set to service 250,000 residents in the area.

Wing spokesperson Jesse Sukin expressed his excitement about bringing this service to Melbourne, following its success in South East Queensland. “We’re thrilled to kick off delivery in a new state and city, delivering to the eastern suburbs of Melbourne,” he said. “Our customers use drone delivery for everyday essentials, like a loaf of bread to prepare school lunch, toiletries, or an afternoon treat like coffee or ice cream. We’ve been able to provide delivery that’s safe, fast, and environmentally friendly.”

One manager-pilot will be responsible for monitoring the 18 drones during flight, while maintenance staff will be on hand at the Ringwood base. Customers will be able to order small packages, such as coffees, bread, and takeout, through the DoorDash app. This expansion makes Melbourne the largest city Wing services globally.
