Port Douglas is still copping an absolute drenching after Tropical Cyclone Jasper smashed the region overnight. For more I’m joined by Meteorologist Angus Hines from the Bureau and QFES Assistant Commissioner Brad Commens.
Jasper Slams Port Douglas
Port Douglas, a popular tourist destination in North Queensland, has been battered by heavy storms and flooding following the passage of Tropical Cyclone Jasper. The cyclone, which has since been downgraded to an ex-tropical cyclone, slammed the region overnight, leaving a trail of destruction and causing life-threatening flooding.
The area is still grappling with an absolute drenching as the aftermath of the cyclone continues to wreak havoc. According to meteorologist Angus Hines from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), the cyclone brought widespread rain across North Queensland, even after easing from its tropical cyclone status. Over 400mm of rain has been recorded in some areas, leading to critical flood situations.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Assistant Commissioner Brad Commens spoke at a news conference on the storm’s aftermath. He confirmed that the force of the storm had left trees down and cut power to 40,000 homes and businesses. This has created significant challenges for the emergency services as they work tirelessly to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of residents.
Despite its downgrade, ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper continues to pose threats with more rain and high winds predicted. BoM has issued a warning of ‘life-threatening’ flooding as the storm continues to batter far north Queensland. Residents have been warned to stay indoors as the flood threat remains.
Cyclone Jasper crossed the coast at Wujal Wujal, north of Cairns, on Wednesday and has since weakened. However, the heavy rain and floods have now become the focus of concern. The intense weather system has hammered Far North Queensland, causing serious disruptions to daily life and operations.
The aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jasper is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of extreme weather events. As the region battles through the storms, the resilience of the community is being tested. However, with the unwavering efforts of emergency services and the strong spirit of the locals, Port Douglas is determined to weather this storm and recover in the days to come.
