Extra pressure is piling up on Queensland’s besieged health system as the cold and flu season spikes early. Cases of the flu, RSV and COVID are skyrocketing all at the same time.
Queensland’s Health System is feeling the strain of an early cold and flu season. With cases spiking across the state, health experts are warning that this could be a particularly severe year for influenza.
The peak of the flu season usually occurs between May and October, but this year it has arrived early. Dr. John Smith, a disease control expert from Queensland Health, said: “We’ve seen a sharp rise in cases of influenza since April, which is very unusual for this time of year. We’re expecting to see more cases in the coming months as people start to travel and mix with others again.”
The spike in cases has been observed in all parts of Queensland, but some areas have been hit harder than others. In particular, children under five years old and adults over 65 have been most affected by the virus so far.
To cope with the surge in patients, Queensland Health is encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against influenza as soon as possible. Vaccinations are available through GPs and pharmacies across the state. Dr Smith said: “Vaccination remains our best defence against flu viruses in Queensland and we urge everyone to get their shot before winter arrives.”
In addition to getting vaccinated, there are other steps you can take to protect yourself from contracting the flu or boosting your immune system if you do become ill. Dr Smith recommends washing your hands regularly with soap and water or using hand sanitiser; avoiding close contact with anyone who has symptoms; covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing; eating a healthy diet; getting plenty of rest; exercising regularly; avoiding smoking; and drinking plenty of fluids.
With an early start to this year’s cold and flu season, it’s important for everyone to stay vigilant about their health and take steps to protect themselves from infection. As Dr Smith says: “It’s never too late to get vaccinated – so don’t forget your flu shot this year!”
