This week’s cybernews focuses on cyberattacks that happened in U.S. Pro-Russian hackers
attacked multiple U.S. airport websites.

On October 10th, cyberattacks temporarily took more than a dozen U.S. airports offline.
The airports that were targeted include New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Los Angeles
International Airport.

Talking to ABC News, John Hultquist, head of intelligence analysis at the cybersecurity firm
Mandiant, said that “airport websites were impacted by the ‘distributed denial of service’ or DDoS
attack. That type of attack essentially overloads sites by jamming them with artificial users.”

According to various sources, the attacks DID NOT affect air traffic control, internal airport
communication, or other key operations. Yet they surely caused inconvenience for many people.
Who is responsible for it? According to The Guardian, “The hack has been attributed to a group
known as Killnet, Russian hacktivists who support the Kremlin but are not thought to directly be
government actors.”

Forbes states that the group is also known for carrying out attacks across
Europe, including targeting the EUROVISION song contest. In the U.S. case, the attacks did not
cause serious damage. However, they are a great reminder of how important cybersecurity is.
