Cyclone Freddy: Queensland’s first cyclone of the season expected to form this week

Queensland is bracing for the first cyclone of the season, with Cyclone Freddy expected to form off the coast this week.

The low pressure system that developed over the Kimberley moved off the coast on 3 February and slowly developed as it tracked west over open waters. Despite unfavourable conditions, it is likely to form into a tropical cyclone by Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned coastal communities to expect strong winds and hazardous surf over the coming days. The impact of Cyclone Freddy is expected to be felt down the length of Queensland’s coast, from Cairns in the north all the way down to Brisbane in the south.

This comes as three other potential cyclones are brewing off Australia’s coast, with two systems forming near Western Australia and one near Northern Territory. It is important for residents in affected areas to stay informed and follow any advice given by authorities.
