There are growing calls for new laws to be introduced to make it a criminal offence for parents to smack their children. Researchers from the Parenting and Family Research Alliance have found corporal punishment of a child is detrimental to their mental health, relationships and can cause anti-social behaviour. Legislative reform would remove the exemption under existing laws that lets parents use “reasonable force” to discipline their child.
