A Brisbane woman is suing the Queensland health system for more than $9 million after her husband was left waiting for hours at Redcliffe hospital following a stroke.
The man, who has been left brain-damaged as a result of the delay, was taken by ambulance to the southeast hospital but instead of being transferred to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital he was left waiting for hours. His wife claims that if her husband had received prompt medical attention, his condition would not have deteriorated so severely.
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said that in June this year some south-east Queensland patients were left on an ambulance stretcher, waiting for an emergency department bed for almost eight hours. This is despite elective surgery being defined as surgery that can be delayed for at least 24 hours.
At the SMART STROKES 2017 Conference it was discussed how evidence regarding rehabilitation of the upper limb after stroke has been translated into clinical practice. It is believed that if this evidence had been applied in this case, the man may not have suffered such severe brain damage due to delays in treatment.
The wife of the man is now suing the state government and calling on them to improve their response times and provide better care to those who need it most. She believes that her husband’s story should serve as a warning to other patients who may be facing similar delays in treatment due to overcrowding in hospitals across Queensland.
