Jasper is now at category 2 intensity and is expected to become a severe tropical cyclone overnight tonight, while tracking south-southwest into the Coral Sea. Jasper is forecast to reach category 4 intensity by Friday, thereafter some weakening may occur over the weekend.

Jasper is forecast to gradually move on a general southwesterly track towards the Queensland coast early next week. At this stage the highest risk of a cyclone impact is the region north of Mackay
As of today, December 6, 2023, Tropical Cyclone Jasper is reported to be intensifying and tracking southwest into the Coral Sea. The cyclone, currently positioned 1430km northeast of Cairns, has escalated to a Category 2 system as of 10 am AEST.
Meteorologists predict that Jasper will develop into a severe tropical cyclone overnight, potentially reaching Category 4 intensity by Friday. Despite an expected weakening over the weekend, Jasper is likely to remain a tropical cyclone as it steers towards the north Queensland coast early next week.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has identified the region north of Mackay as having the highest risk of cyclone impact at this stage. They continue to advise communities in this area to review their cyclone plans and stay informed about the evolving situation over the coming days.
