Australia to Invest $10 Billion in Hercules Aircraft from the US
In a significant move aimed at bolstering its defence capabilities, the Australian Federal Government plans to invest nearly $10 billion in acquiring a fleet of Hercules aircraft from the United States.
This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to expand Australia’s air force and strengthen the nation’s military readiness. The substantial investment will go towards purchasing 20 new C-130J Hercules aircraft, a versatile and reliable transport plane known for its ability to deliver cargo to airfields with short unsurfaced runways and airdrop cargo and paratroopers by parachute.

Capable of transporting up to 92 passengers, 72 combat troops, or 64 paratroopers, these planes can also be used for medical purposes, carrying 74 litter patients and two medical personnel.
The acquisition of these Hercules planes represents a significant upgrade for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), which currently operates a fleet of 12 C-130J-30 Hercules from RAAF Base Richmond.
