Almost $3 billion is being set aside to give Chapel Street’s run-down Jam Factory a stunning makeover. It is set to be demolished next year making way for luxury apartments, hotel rooms, shops and offices.
The Jam Factory, a once-thriving hub of shops and restaurants on Chapel Street in South Yarra, Melbourne, has devolved into a deserted and eerie space. This iconic venue, which opened its doors as a shopping center in 1979, was once the go-to spot for shoppers, diners, and movie enthusiasts. However, it now lies largely abandoned, with only Village Cinemas remaining, earning it the reputation of a “ghost town.”
The few who still venture into the area can’t help but feel a sense of unease. “It’s my local cinema, and I get the creeps every time,” one person confessed on social media. Another visitor shared a similar experience, saying, “I caught a movie here the other day, and I felt like I was trespassing.” Others have simply described the atmosphere as “scary.”
Fortunately, a major transformation is on the horizon. Plans are underway to demolish and rebuild the Jam Factory as part of a $2.75 billion makeover set to begin in 2025. The ambitious project will feature five towers of apartments, including a luxurious penthouse priced at a staggering $30 million, as well as hotels and shops. According to Matt Lanigan from the Chapel St Precinct Association, this revamp will “bring in new business operators and confidence into investing in Chapel St again.”
The Village cinema is the only business confirmed to remain in the Jam Factory after construction, and it will be relocated to the ground floor. The historic Jam Factory chimney will also be preserved and rebuilt as part of the new piazza. With these exciting changes on the horizon, the Jam Factory is poised to regain its former glory and once again become a vibrant hub of activity on Chapel Street.
