‘Significant setback’: Albanese could be forced into minority government at next election

The Australian’s Editor-at-Large Paul Kelly warns the Labor Party could be forced into a minority government which would be a “significant setback” for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“At this stage, it seems to me the real threat is not so much that Albanese will lose the prime ministership at the next election,” Mr Kelly told Sky News host Sharri Markson.

“But he may well be forced into minority government.

“That will be a really significant setback for him after one term to be thrown into minority government.”

Mr Kelly sat down with Ms Markson to discuss the Albanese government’s position at the end of 2023.

Significant Setback: Albanese Could be Forced into Minority Government at Next Election

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing a potential political upheaval, as reports suggest that he could be forced into a minority government in the forthcoming election. This development, described as a “significant setback” by The Australian’s Editor-at-Large Paul Kelly, could drastically alter the landscape of Australia’s political scene.

Albanese’s popularity seems to be waning, with recent polls indicating that swing voters perceive him as ‘weak’ and ‘ineffective’. The Prime Minister’s handling of various national issues has caused his approval ratings to decline over the past 12 months, raising serious questions about his leadership and the future of the Labor Party.

Furthermore, Albanese’s government has been severely criticised for its migration policies. Shadow Housing Minister Michael Sukkar has accused the government of presiding over record levels of migration, while Albanese himself has pledged to fix what he describes as Australia’s ‘broken’ migration system. The contentious migration issue could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the next election.

In addition to domestic issues, Albanese also faces increasing pressure on the international front. His dealings with China have come under fire, particularly after an incident involving Australian Navy divers and a Chinese warship. Albanese is expected to discuss trade and security issues in an upcoming meeting with China’s leaders, a meeting that could significantly impact his standing both nationally and globally.

Additionally, the Prime Minister is dealing with internal party pressure to lift the ban on nuclear energy. This move could potentially cause further divisions within the Labor Party and alienate some of its traditional voter base.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing significant challenges from all sides. With a potential minority government looming, his leadership is under intense scrutiny. The upcoming election could be a turning point for both Albanese and the Labor Party, with the possibility of a dramatic shift in Australia’s political landscape.

The next few months will undoubtedly be crucial for Albanese. How he navigates these challenges could not only determine his political future but also shape the future of Australia.
